Packed Room for MPHA Act FRESH Campaign Kickoff

Room 222 was packed shoulder to shoulder with officials, advocates and citizens, as people joined together at the State House with the Act FRESH leadership team on Monday, February 7th to introduce the Act FRESH campaign (website and report (pdf) Dr. Howard Koh, Former DPH Commissioner and now Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Massachusetts EOHHS Secretary JudyAnn Bigby, along with many other officials, spoke about the importance of improving access to affordable, healthy food and safe public space for physical activity. Valerie Bassett, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Public Health Association introduced the agenda’s four legislative priorities. Representative Sanchez spoke about the importance of these issues as health care reform must intersect with the goals of public health to create successful change. Senator Eldridge and Senator McGee also spoke about utilizing prevention and wellness in policy to create healthier communities, improve the quality of life and to cut back on health care costs. The message that was clear: with coordinated action and political will, we can make significant progress to make every community in the Commonwealth a healthier place. Legislative attendance included Representatives Sanchez, Smizik, Lewis, Wolf and Kafka, and Senators McGee and Eldridge; and there was a special thanks to Sen.
