Real Voices: Your Weekly Dose from the HCFA Helpline

January 11, 2009

Every week we highlight the voices of real people that contact our Helpline every day. Once a week you will be introduced to a family whose life has changed for the better due to health reform. If you or anyone you know needs assistance applying for free or low-cost health care coverage, please contact our Helpline online, or call 1-800-272-4232. Here’s this week’s story:

Laura’s family never knew that affordable health insurance was within their reach until they attended a health fair where they learned about their options from a Helpline Counselor. Laura is a 39-year-old stay-at-home mother of 2 children and her husband is a pastor. Her family received assistance completing her application for assistance, and just a few weeks later, she was notified about their eligibility for a comprehensive health insurance program.

The family was ecstatic about their new health coverage. For the first time they could go to the doctor for regular visits, and when Laura learned that she was pregnant, she could get prenatal care. The baby was born by emergency cesarean section. They were so excited to have a healthy baby, but two months later, panic set in as Laura started to bleed profusely.

The doctors diagnosed her problem as a reaction that some women can have after having a cesarean baby, when blood coagulates on the uterus wall. So As you can imagine, having a 2-month-old new born baby to take care of, still recovering from the cesarean, and a whole other new surgery that would require her more rest and time to recuperate. Laura says that being eligible for the state health insurance and having received support from the helpline counselors was just the best comfort she could ever have. Here what she has to say:

“I’m so thankful to have the safety of being able to use Massachusetts health insurance, and the great work and friendly treatment I always received from the Helpline which made me feel protected and well taken care of. The whole process I went through lately was just so painful. I have no words to thank HCFA for all the help they provided us. All of this could be so rough. Since we got to know about this wonderful organization about 2 years ago, I have been receiving all the guidance necessary to solve our health issues. My husband and I are just so grateful for it”.
