Real Voices: Your Weekly Dose from the HCFA Helpline

Just a few short months ago, Lisa was desperate for help. She has suffered from a chronic disease for years and didn’t know what she could do to afford all the medications that she needs to control her condition. Just one of her necessary medications would cost her $1300 a month if she had to pay out-of-pocket.

Lisa’s close friend mentioned HCFA’s Helpline number, and she called to fill out an application for health benefits. Soon after, Lisa was informed that she was eligible for comprehensive health insurance and it finally became possible for her to get treatment for her condition.

Now that she is eligible for MassHealth, she can go to the doctor for regular visits and can receive all the best care necessary to treat her medical condition that was diagnosed by doctors as Lupus. The doctors say that this kind of health issue needs to be treated because it can get gradually worse and can also affect different parts of the body.

Paying out of pocket used to be one of Lisa’s biggest burdens in life because she couldn’t afford the treatments, and Lupus is a serious condition that occasionally requires emergency care. Lisa recognizes all the great work Health Care for All does in the state of Massachusetts and she wants to express her tremendous gratitude:

“HCFA was vital to help us to apply for MassHealth. All the processes seem to be too hard and we just couldn’t make it work. MassHealth is like a mother for me. It is always there when I need it. I received all the best care even the pharmacy calls me when I need the refill. And my doctors have all the attention and care for me. I just can’t explain all my gratitude. I’m really surrounded by all the best and kind professionals.”
