URGENT ALERT - Key Vote On Tuesday - Tell Scott Brown to Save Prevention Funds For MA
Tomorrow - Tuesday, Sept. 14 - the US Senate is scheduled to vote on a critical amendment that would gut the Prevention and Public Health Fund included as part of national health reform.
The Fund provides resources to national, state, and local programs to make Americans healthier and reduce racial and ethnic health disparities. Massachusetts is in line to receive an estimated $300 million through this program.
Senator Johanns of Nebraska will offer an amendment on September 14 that would eliminate this Fund to pay for a change in business tax reporting rules. Details are at this Community Catalyst blog post.
Senator Kerry is on record as opposing the Johanns amendment, but Senator Brown has not taken a public position.
Call Senator Scott Brown today at 617-565-3170 or 202-224-4543 and ask him to vote NO on the Johanns Amendment and to preserve the Prevention and Public Health Fund. You can click here to send an email to Senator Brown, courtesy of Families USA.
UPDATE: Sadly, on a procedural vote, Senator Scott Brown voted in favor in Johanns amendment. The amendment failed to get the 60 votes needed under the Senate rules, so the proposal was not advanced. We're very disappointed in the Senator's vote, and hope he will become a champion of public health.
