Press Statement From Health Care For All's Executive Director Amy Rosenthal Regarding The Tax Bill Signed Into Law

December 22, 2017

(Boston, MA)- Statement from Health Care For All's Executive Director Amy Rosenthal regarding the tax bill that was signed into law by President Trump today:

“The tax bill that was just signed into law by President Trump takes Massachusetts and the country in the wrong direction. Instead of investing in our working families so that they can have healthy and productive lives, Congress has decided to provide an early Holiday gift to billionaires and corporations who don’t need the extra help.

“The majority in Congress has also used tax reform as a back door to decimate the Affordable Care Act. Repealing the individual mandate will result in 13 million people losing their health insurance coverage at the national level, as well as a steep increase in premiums and the potential collapse of insurance markets.

“Massachusetts is in a unique situation, as we have our own individual mandate and will be protected from the devastating effects of this repeal. Our state law maintains the requirement for all residents in the state to have health insurance and that will help keep our marketplace stable. This mandate, among other reforms, has allowed the Commonwealth to remain number 1 in the country in terms of insurance, with 97.5% of our residents covered, according to the last data released by the U.S.  Census.

“However, Massachusetts is not immune to the impacts of the new tax law.  Legislative leaders have said they intend to use the deficits caused by this law as an excuse to attack Medicare and Medicaid. We also hear of renewed attempts to again try to repeal the ACA. Health Care For All will continue to do its utmost to make sure everyone has access to quality, affordable coverage.

“On behalf of consumers across the Commonwealth, we would like to thank our Congressional Delegation for their firm opposition to this bill and their energetic attempts to stop it on its tracks. We urge them to stay vigilant as new attempts to cut vital programs such as Medicare and Medicaid will come to the floor in Congress in the following month in order to find the savings that will allow to transfer $1.5 Trillion in tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.”
